Bidart Bros. Apple Recall

Listeria Linked to Prepackaged Caramel Apples

In January of 2015, Bidart Bros. voluntarily recalled Granny Smith and Gala apples because environmental testing revealed contamination with Listeria monocytogenes at the firm’s apple-packing facility.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this outbreak was linked to commercially-produced, prepackaged whole caramel apples. Thirty-five people from 12 states were infected with the outbreak strains of Listeria monocytogenes and were hospitalized. Eleven of these illnesses were in pregnant women, with one illness resulting in the loss of an unborn child. Listeriosis contributed to at least three of the seven deaths that were reported.
