Listeria Outbreak in Blue Bell Creameries

Listeria Likely Entered Through Equipment

Listeria outbreaks resulted in 10 illnesses from 2010 to 2015. Blue Bell believes that Listeria likely entered their facility from various potential sources and established on some pieces of equipment.

According to the Root Cause Assessment released in 2016 from Blue Bell Creameries Inc.

“We could not identify a single common source of Listeria in the facility. Accordingly, we directed our corrective actions toward addressing individual pieces of equipment that returned presumptive positive test results, cleaning and sanitizing our entire facility and equipment, and enhancing our sanitation procedures and testing programs to protect against reintroduction of Listeria.”

All involved were hospitalized and three died. (Food Safety News)

Blue Bell was fined $850,000.
